Native America Calling (2023)
Lumbee Tribe vs. the KKK
Ryan joins host Shawn Spruce and a panel of Lumbee academics and tribal government officials (Lawrence Locklear, Tammy Maynor, and Chelsea Barnes) for a live, on-air radio discussion commemorating the 65th anniversary of the 1958 Battle of Hayes Pond, a historic event in which hundreds of Lumbees and allies drove members of the Ku Klux Klan out of Robeson County. Includes discussion of political lobbying against a proposed amendment to the 1956 Lumbee Act by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and allied tribal nations.
